France in Brazil

It might be a coincidence but lately even the French President and his famous Premiere Dame Carla Bruni have spent some time in Rio. Among other business the French Cultural Year in Brazil has been officially opened by Niko Sarko.

The niceset part for C38 has been the encounter with the very special family H, with little Elias running around and playing as home, and the sisters Alma & Marcia manouvering a Macbook like experts. Claire asking for the bakery receipts (banana cake and mango crunch have been on the top of the list) and Prince Arthur H having a sigarette on the terrace-bar.
Arthur H has performed with Lenine in a special event of music for the Brazilian & French Cultural partnership

Another VIP guest has been LOUNA, a young but very experienced traveller and blogger, that has come twice in C38 with her parents Carlos & Cat and we are sure they will be back soon as they are very brazilians and perfectly felt at home with us. Check the VOYAGE of Louna to know their next adventures on the way to Patagonia.

Vive la France au Bresil 2009!!

Salvador by the sea

Many of our guests after visiting Rio de Janeiro decide to go to Salvador de Bahia, former capital of the country in the 18th century, Salvador has a lot to see and to experience.

Beeing the second biggest bay in the world, the sea is always one of the best way to understand the city and its unique location. The ferry terminal, in front of Mercado Modelo(handkraft centre) is a very busy place.

From there you can visit the other islands inside the bay like Ilha de Itaparica and many others destinations, but most of everything it s a perfect way to get away of the crowd and caos of the big cities like this one.

Our recommendation is to stay in the neighborhood of Santo Antonio, just above the port area and practically the natural extension of Pelourinho. Pousada das Flores manager/owner Eric, has just opened a new space called Pousada des Arts, that really worth to be checked out!

From Salvador Ferry terminal the top destination is Morro de Sao Paulo also know as Ilha de Tinharè, just a couple of hours away from Salvador and a confortable (depending on the sea conditions) Catamaran ride.
We ll tell you more about Morro on the next post, now enjoy the views of Salvador by the sea.

Museu Casa do Pontal

With a live performance of Nicholas Krassik in a beautifull garden decorated with wooden furnitures by La Vereda and many important people and authorities presents, was opened last saturday a new area at Museu Casa do Pontal, presenting an amazing exhibition of ceramics from Vale do Jequitinhonha(north of Minas Gerais) called " Afluencias"

The Casa do Pontal is situated on a 12,000 m2 plot of land in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes, near the Barra da Tijuca, between the solid granite stone, Pedra Branca, and Prainha. Approximately 200 folk artists from every region of Brazil have their work covering the second half of the XX Century, represented in the exhibit.
Almost the entire collection is the work of the man who created the Museu Casa do Pontal, Jacques Van de Beuque. Since his death, the collection has continued to be expanded, through its research and travels around the country for the acquisition of new works of Brazilian Folk Artists

The collection of the Museu Casa do Pontal, in public view or stored in a climate controlled environment, is made up of more than 8,000 works of Brazilian Folk Art, counting sculptures, figures, wood carvings, models and mechanized and articulated sets. The works were produced using various different types of materials, such as clay, wood, cloth, sand, iron, aluminum, bread dough, straw and wire.

The star of the night was the 86 years old artist Isabel Mendes da Cunha, a living reference for her art work in Brazil and world wide. The Exihibition will stay on till the 29th of March 2009, to know more about the museum: www.museucasadopontal.com.br

World Water Council

The World Water Council was established in 1996 in response to increasing concern from the global community about world water issues. The Board of Governors of the World Water Council met in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, on November 26-27, 2008. Hosted by the Brazilian National Water Agency (ANA), the meeting focused primarily on the preparations for the World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey, March 16-22, 2009.

Mila(in the picture together with Chris) and Carine were key elements for the summit and before going back to Marseille they joined C38 for a few days of rest….even if with the buzzing night life of Rio and Marina s Vernissage they didn t sleep a lot.
It has been a pleasure having you here with us, looking forward to have you again soon, we wish you all the best.
