The time has come for our 8 Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies to leave the mother and join their new family. Two brother left for Macae, as suprise birthday presents for Martina (10) and Francisco (13), sons of our C38 best client Alex. One has climbed the montain region with our friend Yann, to be his companion and guard in Benfica(S. Pedro da Serra)

The lady should meet soon her friend Silva( adult male RR ) in a superb mansion not far from here, in Santa Teresa...So don t miss the last pups available before is too late..
A special visit to the puppies arrived this sunday, with little OTO (almost one year old) interacting with the dogs..

Oto had a great time playing and looking the little ones around him, and so did we taking pictures and watching them having fun with eachother.

Progetti - New Art Gallery in town

Entrada franca

Renovation

After a long week when C38 drive to craziness the wood carpenter and other workers, with a tide schedule and a dead line set by future guests.
Now we are back to our peaceful routine.

The renovation happened a few weeks ago in a gap between the bookings.
Now castelinho has his rooms from 1866 with a new look.

The big hall on the second floor also received new painting and a brand new illumination system that put the art pieces literally in the spot light.

Those improvements intent to give to our guess a better and more comfortable stay.
Started with our bar and the next step is probably the garden that will receive some new plants to become even more beautiful.
Stay tuned for the next changes.

CCC 7th anniversary

Last Monday 07/07 Castelinho38 have been kindly invited by our partners CCC – Centro Cultural Carioca –to their 7 anniversary party.
CCC is a beautiful sobrado in Lapa/city Centre , one of the most prestigious places to hear good brasilian music in RIO, a cultural centre with Dance Classes, Art Exhibitions, and a fabulous authentic carioca cusine.
The encounter between CCC and C38 has been through the great mandolin master Mike Marshall, our guest of the month of December, when he performed with Hamilton de Hollanda.
Since then our tower is one of the logos among their partners in the monthly CCC Artistic Programme, so accurately prepared by Alfredo Galhoes and Isnard Manso.

Business aside, CCC is one of our favorite and most recommended place for a music night out, where recently we saw the new generation of samba like Princesess Roberta Sa, Martinalia, Leticia Tui and Teresa Cristina or Dukes Herminio Bello de Carvalho, Rodrigo Maranhao, Paulinho Moska and Pedro Miranda.

Before blowing CCC seven candles, some masters of Samba and Brasilian Music and Poetry performed on stage together with Grupo Semente: Nelson Sargento, Aurea Martins, Paolo Marques, Agenor de Oliveira, Leticia Tui and Elisa Lucinda.
“ Because Music and Poetry = Brasilan samba, the cultural mark of this country”, our friend and writer A. Riva would say.

Check the programme for the next 2 months, visiting their site www.centroculturalcarioca.com.br
Or simply go there any time, as the quality of people, music and food is excellent!

Special dates

We had so many things going on lately that we didn t know where to start with so after almost a week without news, here a summery of what happened and what has to come this month...

Starting with our beloved TADEO, who lived with us some unforgettable months here at Castelinho38 last year, and is celebrating his birthday today 11 of June. Tadeo is now living in San Clemente del Tuyu, not far from Pinamar in Argentina with mamma Mariel, for who we will always be thankful for all she has done @ C38 . Parabens Tata from all the C38 staff and Santa Teresa friends you have left behind. We are missing you, take care and a lot of saudades!

Our dear friend and neighbour ALBERTO RIVA has launched yestarday, 10 of June, in a famous Library of Milan, his second book during a very special night. The book " Seguire i pappagalli fino alla fine" its a concentration of stories, interviews, chats and facts about Rio de Janeiro and its multiples souls. Stefano Bollani, the greatest pianist and jazz musician who has just launched a CD with only brasilians tunes, was there on the piano to make the night unforgetable! C38 team was there with our hearts..

Last saturday 7 of June Casteliho38 hosted one of the nicest event ever! The children were the main actores during a fantastic afternoon were adults and the small ones enjoyed our terrace bar and played till late. Jardim Ciranda is a nursery following the Waldorf education system and is looking for a place to settle in Santa Teresa. Here at castelinho38 they have found last saturday many new friends and parents interested in this lovely project we have supported since the beginning. Our next post will be dedicated to them and will show you fotos and tell you more about it!

It has officially ended the 1st of June, our first partnership with Rede Record TV, with whom we have started in October and have been broadcasted during 6 months during prime time in all the country, showing our beautiful house facade.
The soap opera has found great number of fans during these months and we at C38 had always worked in harmony with the big Tv crew, technicians, actors and all the equipments they used every time they had filmed here. Our Manager Fabio will be missing a lot his tv stars wondering around our terrace bar.

Hasta pronto Tumbao !!

Santa Teresa is a very cosmopolitan distric, where many foreigners and visitors melt with locals daily. But there is only one place where you can breath the real South American atmosphere, taste its regional specialities and listen to the most enchanting music : Tumbao de Malevo!

Its name - Tumbao de Malevo - has an interesting story being "tumbao" the drum used in the caribbean and "malevo" an argentinian slang for "smartass" and somehow contains all the continent south, from Panama to Ushuaia, in two words.

Santiago and Iuri, the owners, have been so good in putting together art, music, cinema, clown performances, classes, food, drinks and good vibes of what resulted to be a concentrated of South American culture.

Coffees and Cachacas are fabulous here, as well as all the meals that comes out of the wooden oven. At week-ends specials breakfast and brunches are served and weight in the typical-atypical brazilian per-kilo system. While some live acustic music is massaging your ears and soul.

The wide open terrace with panoramic view over the main streets of Santa Teresa, the peaceful garden decorated with antiques and natural elements, together with the nice people who works here make this place very special.

Castelinho38 was there on its last sunday, together with the special "model of 90" you have seen in the pictures. Tumbao de Malevo is closing now for some refurbishing and we are all looking forward to its opening soon, hasta siempre queridos amigos....

Grand Premier

After more than one month of hard work, lots of liters of coffee and thousands of cigarettes the big day has arrived, and C38 members were there to support.

The spectacle started at 19:00h of saturday night at Oi futuro theater.

"What's wrong with the word" is a very dynamic, intriguing and all most experimental presentation.

The show mix action, projections, confused dialogs and video conference, stretching the limits of a simple stage.

The story is performed simultaneously in Rio and London at Soho Theater

42% of the action happens in the stage, 37% on the screen and 64% in the mind of the audience ( I told you it was confused!!!)

After the premier a small cocktail for friends and guests happened at Oi Futuro cafeteria to celebrate and calm down the nerves of the first day

Congratulations!!!!!!!

90 ANOS

Castelinho38 went to Sao Paulo last week end in order to represent a big community that could not be there in this very special event: in the 29th of March, our beloved grandmother, aunt and sister ROBERTA turned 90 years old. Nonna, Tia e Irma Roberta celebrated her 90th birthday in Jaragua, neighborhood of big SAO PAULO, together with relatives and friends.

This incredible person happened to be THE grandmother and every year comes to Brazil to spend some time at Castelinho38, leaving a lot of recipes, friends and muitas saudades.
She was very happy to host more than 100 persons in the BBQ (churrasco) she offered on Saturday with the help of many relatives and friends. The party was a familiar event at Maria's house, where Nonna stays regularly in Sao Paulo.

She got many phone calls from Italy and all over Brasil where Nonna has sons, grandchildren, nephews, godchildren and friends. Since many people asked us to send news and pictures from the celebration, they will all be happy to read this post.

It is a tribute to an elder person that has so much to share and to teach us: after all she lived and experienced in her life it is a wonderful experience to see the joy in her eyes during the party!

Happy birthday ROBERTA and 100 of these days!!!

Happy birthday Rio !

A entrada é gratuita!

Team 38 uniformizado

Retrospective 2007 - Part II

Casa Claugia magazine

In the second half of the year, during the month of September, the photographers and plastic artists, Fernanda Antoun, Alex Topini and Ale Souto utilized the space of Castelinho38 for the exhibition “Integral-Ação+Espaço+Linguagem”. In the garage Alê Souto presented the installation “Desmanche ao Leo” and in the main room Fernanda Antoun and Alex Topini presented photographs from the project “Ir e Vir” and “Cubos”.

We Closed the year in the company of the musician Mike Marshall and with the party “We Smell Nice”. Marshall enchanted all of us with his inspired music. Cariocas and tourists from various locales had the chance to check out Marshall’s strong and delicate work first hand at the Carioca Cultural Centre.

The “We Smell Nice” party was another success. Aproximately 500 people were here to celebrate the birthdays of the plastic artist Marcos Chaves, DJ Mary Byker, and the one year anniversary of the opening of Castelhino38. Of course, we also said “bye bye to 2007” with much happiness and music!

Now our staff is gearing up for 2008. From January on we will host a varied mix of artists, video projects and even some classes for our guests and local Santa Teresa residents. We’re excited about the New Year and wish our guests-- past, present and future— happiness in the coming 12 months. Happy New Year!

Retrospective 2007 - Part I

Art and architecture will always walk side by side. Here at Castelinho38 this connection is always present. The past year was culturally rich for us. We made new partnerships, opened cultural events, and diverse expositions decorated our rooms. Contigo magazine completed a photo essay at Castelinho38 and we were featured in two magazine articles: “Viver em Santa Teresa” in Casa Claudia (Nov./2007) and “Torres Cariocas” in the Journal do Brasil’s Domingo magazine (Nov./2007). The telenovela “Amor e Intrigas” also filmed on location at Castelinho38. So much to talk about! Let’s take it in parts...

In the beginning of the year we hosted a plastic arts exposition by Fabiola Moraes. With a Master’s in cultural heritage and a concentration in anthropology, the artist seeks in her work to analytically consider images of diverse origin, such as urban scenes or icons from the history of art, with the purpose of emphasizing features and particular structures. Some of her work, like other artists that also exhibited here in 2007 (Nilton Pinho, Fernando Mendonça, Jean-Baptiste Dechery, Adriano Melhem, Maria di Andréa, Peter Miro, and Zé Abbra) can be seen in our rooms.

During February we hosted the theatre group “Sobrevento” specialists in animation and puppet’s theatre. Soon after, in April and May, the theatre group “Lume” graced our space. In their “Carioca” season they conducted theatrical presentations and workshops. Tadashi Endo, director, choreographer, and Japanese ballet dancer, celebrated his 60th birthday with us by performing three shows here in Rio.

Sobrevento's show

Dr. Brian Wilson (Babalawo Ifa Adentunde professor of Contemporary Percussion at Brooklyn College of Music in New York) also spent time at Castelinho38. He was here to participate in a cultural exchange program that seeks to share and spread knowledge on “Ifa: African Wisdom”. The program allowed us to better understand African culture, which, for most of us is still a subject barely explored.

In June we continued our cultural work. During the last weekend of the month Santa Teresa held its annual “Portas Abertas”, an event with diverse cultural activities where the principal attractions are the ateliers that open their doors for visitation. Castelinho38 participated in the cultural itinerary by hosting an exposition by a neighbourhood artist cooperative, the live installation “Homunculus”, and an animated party with music from DJ Mary Byker.

“Homunculus”

In the period between June and July, Castelhino38 lent its support and partnership to FotoRio2007-The International Photography Festival of Rio de Janeiro. Castelhino38 hosted participating photographers of the event. Soon after FotoRio2007, the exposition “Invaded City: An Itinerant Project between Brazil and Spain,” which explores the conflicted and chaotic relationship between urban space and nature, and their manifestation as forces of organization and destruction, was hosted at Castelhino38.
